Desktop wallet version 2.1.7.424 is out!

Our project continues to grow, and along with the attention from a broader user base, it appears we have also attracted interest from parties attempting to monitor network activity. During an internal investigation, we identified suspicious activity from certain nodes on the network, which we believe may be operating as spy nodes (nodes that monitor network topology and staking patterns).

While we are actively working on a long-term protocol-level solution to enhance staking privacy, we've also developed a short-term mitigation tool that allows you to secure your configuration immediately.

We suspect that these spy nodes primarily monitor PoS blocks, so this issue concerns stakers in particular. It's important to note that transaction privacy and fund anonymity remain fully intact—this is purely about network-level privacy for stakers. We strongly recommend all stakers update to the latest version and apply the suggested settings.

The new version introduces support for a special configuration file, p2p_manual_config.json, which should be placed in the same directory where the application stores its data (see documentation for details). This config file includes several settings that were previously only available via command-line arguments.

Most importantly, it introduces the ip_black_list option, allowing users to specify a list of untrusted or undesirable nodes. We've prepared a sample configuration file [here](<https://github.com/hyle-team/zano/blob/master/utils/p2p_manual_config/black_listed_ips/p2p_manual_config.json>). that includes IP addresses of nodes we consider suspicious.

As mentioned earlier, the blacklist is a temporary solution. Spy nodes can change their IPs and improve their techniques. While we continue to work on a more robust, long-term protocol fix, we also recommend configuring your client to connect only to explicitly trusted nodes by using the use_only_priority_peers and priority_peers_list options in the same config file.

This approach offers better protection against metadata leakage related to PoS block generation and transaction propagation, but it requires that you trust the nodes listed in ip_priority_list.

An extended version of p2p_manual_config.json is available [here](<https://github.com/hyle-team/zano/blob/master/utils/p2p_manual_config/proxy_via_seed_nodes/p2p_manual_config.json>), preconfigured to connect only to backbone nodes deployed and maintained by the core team.

We appreciate your understanding and encourage you to take these steps to limit spy nodes' ability to correlate IP addresses with staking activity while we continue working on a more effective and protocol-level solution to strengthen network privacy. These configuration options allow users to choose their desired level of network privacy based on their specific threat model.

Tutorial
To prevent your node from connecting to known spy nodes, get the p2p_manual_config.json sample file [here](<https://github.com/hyle-team/zano/blob/master/utils/p2p_manual_config/black_listed_ips/p2p_manual_config.json>).

To download it click on "Download raw file" at the upper right corner.

If you instead want your your desktop node to only connect to backbone nodes deployed and maintained by the core team and refuse incoming connections, get the alternative p2p_manual_config.json file from [here](<https://github.com/hyle-team/zano/blob/master/utils/p2p_manual_config/proxy_via_seed_nodes/p2p_manual_config.json>).

Place either of the files on your Zano data folder located on:

Windows
C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\Zano

MacOS
/Users/<USERNAME>/Library/Application Support/Zano

Linux
~/.Zano

Restart your desktop wallet for the new configuration to apply.

If you need help with the blacklisting of IPs, please use the technical support channel and we'll provide assistance to you.

🎢🤔 #ETH CryptoRank: The surge in open interest signals growing demand for Ethereum. However, investors should exercise caution, as peaks in open interest have often been followed by price corrections.
